15 Nights on Star Legend

Circle Sicily and browse stunning Italian coastlines, authentic Puglian towns, enchanting Greek islands, and iconic ruins. Cross the Corinth Canal, a historic channel only wide enough for small ships like ours. Encounter restless volcanoes from Mt. Vesuvius to Mt. Etna to nighttime cruising past Stromboli, tears of glowing lava often streaming down its face. Walk in the footsteps of the past at Pompeii, the Oracle’s shrine in Delphi, the Valley of the Temples in Porto Empedocle, and Valetta’s cathedral. Discover Puglia’s Greek heritage in relaxed, authentic ports like Gallipoli and Reggio Calabria, and gaze in awe at the giant Greek theater in ancient Syracuse, a venue the size of the Hollywood Bowl hewn by hand from the pale limestone. From street food to wine tastings, Greek ruins to Rome’s incredible wealth of antiquities, this voyage makes every day one to savor. Transit through the Corinth Canal is subject to local conditions and may occasionally be impacted by closures due to natural causes or construction activity beyond Windstar’s control. Should a closure occur, the itinerary will be updated accordingly, and booked guests will be notified as soon as information becomes available.

You'll want to be on deck today as we transit the narrow Corinth Canal with other private yachts and Greek mail steamers. It's a shortcut reserved for petite ships like ours, and as we cruise between the narrow limestone walls we are the envy of all the ancient Romans who once portaged their ships along this very route before there was a canal.  Transit through the Corinth Canal is subject to local conditions and may occasionally be impacted by closures due to natural causes or construction activity beyond Windstar’s control. With 3,000 years of history, you can't turn around in Athens without encountering the past. The Acropolis, a UNESCO site, the Plaka, and the Acropolis Museum are must-sees. But leave time if you can to climb Pnyx Hill for photos of the Parthenon at sunset, to buy your own set of Greek komboloi (worry beads), and to explore the metro stations that serve as mini-museums for the relics that are constantly being unearthed.

Athens, Acropolis & New Museum Tour & Transfer to Windstar Hotel

The ancient remains of Athens constitute one of the brightest jewels of the Mediterranean. The Ancient City and the Acropolis have been kept fairly intact. You will see perhaps the most famous temple of the Ancient City, the Parthenon. Walking up a winding path towards the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will pass through the Propylaea, which is the entrance to the Acropolis and see the Erechtheum Temple, built between 421-405 B.C. and famous for its exquisite attention to detail. You will also see the Porch of the Caryatids, (or Porch of the Maidens), in the distance. Reinforced by man, the natural fortress of the Acropolis stands 230 feet above the city. You cannot help but be impressed by the wide-sweeping view below. The intent of the new Acropolis Museum is to house every artifact found on the archaeological site. You will see the unsurpassed quality of the masterpieces of ancient Athens, including the entire sculpted decoration of the Parthenon as it was on the building. You will see many architectural phases and thousands of finds that provide valuable insight into the everyday activities of ancient Greece. Please note: There is no shopping stop organized but guests can explore the shops at the Acropolis. The path up to the Acropolis is winding and may be challenging for those with mobility issues.

Fiskardo, Melissani Lake & Ouzo Tasting *

The varied landscapes of Kephalonia seem like they have been created by the hands of a dreaming god. The coastline is like a lace of sheer cliffs plunging into a turquoise sea and gentle pebbly and sandy beaches. The hinterland is a mosaic of densely forested mountains and well cultivated hills and valleys. Small villages and towns emerge from the pines and the cypress trees, topped by Venetian castles and chapels. You will drive to the village of Karavomylos where the mysterious, 40,000-year-old, underground Melissani Lake is located. During the 1953 earthquake, the cave's roof collapsed, creating amazing light displays on the cave walls. Legend says the lake is named for the nymph Melissanthe, who fell in love with Pan and drowned in the lake when he rejected her. A small boat will be waiting to take you on a breathtaking trip across its mysteriously salty, subterranean water. You will find yourself surrounded by a vast, shimmering play of blue and violet colors, created by the sun filtering through the hole in the ceiling more than 100 feet overhead. The headwater is in Argostólion, and it enters the cave by traveling across the island and through holes in the coastline. Your tour will continue to the village of Sami, for a refreshment stop for ouzo (aniseed flavored liqueur) and Greek meze at a waterfront restaurant. Please note : Wear comfortable walking shoes. Sorrento, Herculaneum

The city of Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded around the 4th century B.C., copying the geometric regularity of the layout of Naples. Its "decumani" (main streets) have an east-west orientation, while the "cardines" (narrower streets) run north-south. There is undeniably a "feeling" about Herculaneum, quite different from Pompeii, where you get the impression that its ancient population of 5,000 packed up and left only moments ago. Herculaneum was smaller than Pompeii but is better preserved simply because, while hot ashes consumed the wood of Pompeii's buildings, Herculaneum was covered by hot mud which sealed and protected entire city blocks. This means that marble floors, mosaics, paintings and carbonized woods can still be admired today. You will discover the ancient luxurious properties and villas including the House of the Mosaic, the House of Deer, the Thermae (baths) and the House of Carbonized Furniture. After a guided tour, you will be driven back to meet the yacht in Sorrento. Please note: This tour involves considerable walking on uneven pathways. Bring a sun hat, as shade is limited. Trapani, Walking Tour with Sicilian Coffee Break

Trapani is an attractive old port town, rediscovering its charms after years of neglect. Halfway between Europe and Tunis, it was a rich trading center throughout the early Middle Ages, then, flourished again in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a stronghold of the tuna-canning industry. After that, it went into decline, and became a salty old port. Then, it was selected to host the 2004 America's Cup and received a massive injection of cash - buildings were restored, streets in the historic center pedestrianized - giving the town and its people a new confidence. These days Trapani is a thoroughly pleasant place to hang out for a couple of days. You will join your guide for a pleasant walking visit of the historical center of Trapani, with its many churches and palazzos with their ornate façades and elaborate interior, perfect examples of the Baroque style. At the end of the guided visit, enjoy a typical Sicilian coffee break including one cannolo and one coffee or one cappuccino, followed by 45 minutes of free time. At the conclusion of your tour you can leisurely walk back to the pier with your guide or continue to spend time in town returning to the ship on your own. Here you'll find what are widely acclaimed as the best, ancient ruins in the entire Mediterranean. Imagine the wonders of Athens, of Ephesus, of legendary Olympia itself. Then imagine them all in one place, at Agrigento, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you wander the verdant ridge overlooking the Mediterranean you will be transported to the 5th and 6th centuries. The irresistible scent of olive, almond, and eucalyptus trees will entice you back to the present. This is one of the world's most beautiful sites.

Porto Empedocle, Temples Valley

Apart from the Temple of Asclepius, which is found on the banks of the Akragas River, all are situated in the same area on rocky crests south of modern day Agrigento (not really in a valley at all!). Valletta, Mdina's Noble Heritage

Depart the quay and drive to The Silent City - Mdina, Malta's old Capital. Mdina is a medieval walled town situated on a hill in the center of the island. You will walk through the narrow streets of the town, visit St Paul's Cathedral, the Ramparts for a panoramic view, and Palazzo Falson, the best preserved palazzo of its period. Walk down any Maltese street in the town core, with its sheer limestone walls, studded doors and wooden 'gallarijas', and you will get few clues to what lies on the other side of these crumbling facades. Casa Bernard is a perfect example as its sober and imposing facade in the Mannerist 16th century architectural idiom reminiscent of Gerolamo Cassar betrays nothing of the calm, classic beauty that lies within. This walk usually lasts no more than 20 minutes at a slow pace. This is when Casa Bernard starts to shine, as apart from the beauty of its architecture one enjoys the many beautiful pieces of art both ancient and modern. Please note: To enter the Cathedral, guests must have their knees covered, no stiletto heels and no bare shoulders. Walking involves cobblestone streets and climbing steps so this tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility.

Continue with a drive through the Three Cities - Senglea, Cospicua, and Vittoriosa. Left largely unvisited, the Three Cities will show you a slice of authentic life, and a glimpse into Malta's maritime fortunes. The Three Cities can rightly claim to be the cradle of Maltese history. Take a short walking tour then embark on traditional Maltese 'Dghajsas' for a 20 - minute boat trip around the harbor, crossing over to the Waterfront Laguna.

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
